Think You Know What’s Wrong? Why Self-Diagnosis Can Do More Harm Than Good

A headache must be a migraine. A persistent cough? Probably just allergies. That stomach pain? Maybe it’s just acid reflux.

With thousands of health articles, videos, and AI tools available online, it’s tempting to diagnose yourself before seeing a doctor. While being informed about your health is a good thing, making your own diagnosis can be risky—and in some cases, dangerous.

Many illnesses share the same symptoms. Fatigue, for example, may simply be due to lack of sleep, but it can also be a sign of anemia, thyroid disease, diabetes, heart problems, or even certain cancers. Without the right medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests, it’s impossible to accurately determine the real cause.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that inappropriate self-medication and irrational use of medicines can lead to allergic reactions, harmful drug interactions, delayed diagnosis, and even antimicrobial resistance—a growing global health threat caused by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics. WHO also estimates that more than half of all medicines worldwide are used inappropriately.

Here in the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) likewise discourages self-medication, reminding the public that antibiotics should never be taken without proper medical consultation because they do not treat viral illnesses and may cause unnecessary health risks.

Remember: Google can give you information, but it cannot examine you. Social media can suggest possibilities, but it cannot confirm a diagnosis. Only a licensed physician can properly interpret your symptoms together with your medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic test results.

When it comes to your health, don’t rely on guesses. Rely on evidence.

If you’re experiencing unusual or persistent symptoms, the safest decision is to consult a licensed physician and undergo the appropriate diagnostic tests.
